Thermodynamics is a branch of physical chemistry. It deals with the connection between heat, work, energy, and temperature. Thermodynamics studies the dynamic nature of heat or, one might say, the transfer of energy from place to place and the change in its shape. The main idea here is that heat is a form of energy that is equal to a certain amount of mechanical work.

There are four important laws of thermodynamics that everyone should know.

There are four laws of thermodynamics that you will study in physical chemistry. These laws define physical quantities that are energy, temperature, and entropy. All this constitutes a thermodynamic system in thermal equilibrium. All four laws discuss how the aforementioned physical quantities behave and work under different conditions.

Let's look at all the laws one by one.

Zero Law of Thermodynamics

If two systems are in equilibrium with a 3rd system, they're in equilibrium with one another. Zero law helps in determining the temperature.

The first law of thermodynamics

When energy passes, like work, like heat or with the matter, into or out of a system, the internal energy of the system changes in accordance with the law of conservation of energy. Equivalently, perpetual motion machines of the first type (machines that perform work without energy input) are impossible.

The second law of thermodynamics

In a natural thermodynamic process, the sum of the entropies of interacting thermodynamic systems increases. Equivalently, perpetual motion machines of the second type (machines that spontaneously convert thermal energy into mechanical work) are impossible.

Third Law of Thermodynamics

The entropy of the system approaches a constant value when the temperature approaches absolute zero. With the exception of non-crystalline solids (glass), the entropy of the system at temperature is typically on the brink of zero.
