Each country has a governing or controlling body that ensures that every year a certain number of construction engineers or specialists register themselves in the trade so that they can legally begin their work. With each passing year, the number of buildings being built around the world is increasing at a rapid rate and so is the demand for skilled construction engineers. New certification courses have been launched by universities, and even the governing bodies have changed their registration rules over the years. Every country has different rules for certification and different construction skills registration procedures apply. We'll take a look at some of them in this article.

The Federal Scenario. Certification in (US)

In the United States, different states have different rules for the registration of skilled construction specialists. However, the basic guidelines across the country are the same. As building codes and design practices vary from state to state, the process of enrollment also varies. The basic requirement is to ask a person to fulfill the following conditions:

  • The examination of building rules and building skills must be cleared. The test is taken by each state, and the test pattern can be the same or not. Clearing the exam means that you have all the skills needed to become a certified and registered professional.

  • Licensing and registration give you status, for example, if you enroll in Texas, you will be awarded grade A or grade B based on your previous work experience and financial statements. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation issues governing body monitoring and licenses in the state. On the other hand, in Arkansas, the Contractors Licensing Board is the governing body for issuing licenses.

  • The prerequisite for working as a professional is a degree, diploma, or certificate course. A high school diploma or engineering degree is required and the applicant must be over 18 years of age.

There are many associations and institutes that offer certification programs in construction specialization. The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology runs certification programs in building construction, transportation, construction equipment testing, and other civil engineering technologies. There are colleges such as Bluegrass Community and Technical College, the National Association of Safety Professionals, and Ellsworth Community College that offer certification courses and diplomas for the construction industry. Youth Blood USA is a program that helps low-income youth learn while earning. The program offers on-site experience at construction sites, while students complete their certification courses at the same time.

Certification in the United Kingdom

Compared to the United States, age requirements and other basic needs change in the UK. Some certification courses are at least 16 years old when you leave school. The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is one of the most popular certification programs in the UK.

The primary purpose of the CSCS is to ensure improved safety practices and improve the quality of work in the construction industry. Under this scheme, one has to contact the CSCS officials and ask for new registration. Depending on your education and work experience, you will be provided with a CSCS card indicating your level of expertise. There are basically 11 types of cards, and they are accepted by many construction companies and organizations as proof of your expertise.

The National Construction College is a destination in the UK where construction certification courses are offered. City and Guilds is a leading provider of professional qualifications. The prerequisite is former National Professional Qualification (NVQ) and most certificate courses ask for NVQ level. Both working people and students can enroll in the NVQ. Many colleges in the UK offer NVQ certifications.

Certification in India

Developing nations such as India and China have emerged as the largest market for the construction industry. Residential areas, special economic zones, shopping malls, universities, and many other things are being built in these countries. Compared to any other country, these two countries need a large number of civil engineering experts. In India, the respective states consider diplomas and degree holders to be trained professionals.

However, in order to execute and obtain the agreement, you must register with the state government. State governments award grades and a civil engineering graduate gets a Grade B certificate directly. A grade certificate is issued only if you have the required experience and business. Diploma holders are given a Grade C certificate and can take up small construction jobs.

In developing countries, including India and China, security principles are not yet strict, but matters are gradually improving as new guidelines are in the works. There are many engineering colleges in India offering full-time engineering degrees which is suitable for Grade B registration. Here are short-term vocational courses that enable a person to work with contractors. The period ranges from one year to three years.
