What is a “new” coronavirus?

New Coronavirus (CoV) is a new strain of coronavirus.

The disease, caused by a new coronavirus, first identified in Wuhan, China, was called 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) - “CO” means the corona, “VI” means the virus, and “D” means the disease. Previously, this disease was called the “new coronavirus of 2019” or “2019-Nov.”

UN Head Antonio Guterres reiterated his call for a global ceasefire, calling on all parties to the conflict to lay down their arms and allow war-torn countries to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

“The worst is yet to return,” said Guterres on Friday, pertaining to countries like Syria, Libya, and Yemen. "The COVID-19 storm is now arriving in the least of those conflict theaters."

The COVID-19 virus is a new virus linked to the same virus family as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and certain types of colds.

COVID-19 has been described by the World Health Organization as a pandemic. What does that mean?
The characterization of COVID-19 as a pandemic is not a sign that the virus has become more deadly. Rather, it is a recognition of the geographical spread of the disease.
UNICEF is preparing and responding to the COVID-19 epidemic worldwide, knowing that the virus can spread to children and families in any country or community. UNICEF will continue to work with governments and our partners to stop the transmission of the virus and ensure the safety of children and their families.
There is tons of data on the web. What should I do?
There are many myths and misinformation about the spread of coronavirus on the Internet, including how COVID-19 is distributed, how to stay safe and what to do if you are worried about getting infected with the virus.

Therefore, it is important to be careful when looking for information and advice. This explanator provides information and recommendations on how to reduce the risk of infection, whether to remove the child from school, whether it is safe to breastfeed pregnant women and what precautions should be taken during travel. UNICEF has also launched a portal where you can find additional information and recommendations on COVID-19. WHO also has a useful section on some of the most frequently asked questions.
It is also advisable to keep abreast of travel, education and other recommendations provided by your national or local authorities for the latest recommendations and news.

How is COVID-19 virus spread?

The virus is transmitted by direct contact with the respiratory drops of an infected person (formed by coughing and sneezing) and touching surfaces infected with the virus. The COVID-19 virus can survive on the surface for several hours, but simple disinfectants can kill it.

What are the symptoms of coronavirus?

Symptoms may include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia or shortness of breath. Less commonly, a disease can be fatal.

These symptoms are similar to flu (flu) or the common cold, which are much more common than COVID-19. This is why testing is necessary to confirm that someone has COVID-19. It is important to remember that the main preventive measures are the same - frequent hand washing and respiratory hygiene (cover your cough or sneezing with a bent elbow or cloth, and then throw the cloth into a closed basket). In addition, there is a flu vaccine, so be sure to regularly inform yourself and your child about vaccinations.
